Character Death & Becoming a Zombie

| Becoming a Zombie | ||||||||||||
| Everyone has the potential to play their character as a zombie, and there are a number of ways players can cause this to happen with their characters. If your character is bitten or falls during a zombie attack or a lost expedition in the fog, they can come back as a zombie within the same day. You're welcome to play your character as a zombie for a time. If you're planning on taking a Hiatus, you have the option to leave your character as a wandering zombie for a while while on hiatus. Other characters might catch glimpses of your Character's zombie stumbling in and out of the fog, or interact with them if you discussed it beforehand. The third option is to have your character bitten or infected without dying. Characters who become infected suffer the slow track to transforming into a zombie if they are not dealt with. Learn more in the FAQ under Zombies and Virus transmission If your character is bitten by one of the classic zombies (Reachers, Bloats, Shamblers, Crawlers, Skin &Bones, & Armored & Biters) they will become a Shambler or whichever resembles their physical state at the time. Any other zombie (Sprinters for example) will turn the character into the same type of zombie as the one that bit them. When you're tired of playing your character as a zombie, you can kill them off through a player character in town or an npc beyond the fog. If you choose player character, we recommend plotting out who will end up killing your character ahead of time for ease, though it isn't required. | ||||||||||||
| Consequences of Injuries & Death | ||||||||||||
| Of course, characters can die without becoming a zombie as well. In either case, there are consequences beyond just death in this game. Injuries that do not result in death leave lasting marks on characters. They can be scarred or permanently disfigured from injuries that occur in their new lives. These lasting injuries occur when death or infection doesn't follow the injuries. For example, Character A loses an eye in a fight with Character B but does not die. If Character A later dies in an unrelated event they will return without the eye. This does not hold true for injuries in zombie form. The Consequence of Death When a character dies, whether they die instantly or become a zombie the supplies, weapons and any special articles of clothing they were wearing is left behind. They return to town in plain clothes which can be clean or blood stained. Their items are not lost forever. If the character died in town, their items will be found wherever their death occurred. If they died while on an expedition or in the fog, their items will have to be retrieved on the next trip out, if the character is lucky, or from another player's character, if someone scavenged or collected the items. Recovering from death takes a minimum of 3 days. After the third day, your character can come back at any time. Characters will not remember their time as zombies, if they became one (unless stated otherwise in the Bloody Book of Zombies). They will remember their lives up until their death however. When they return, they will find themselves lost in the fog on the outskirts of town. The shadow of footprints on the ground will lead them back into town. With each death a character experiences, a little more of the fog enters their mind. After their first death, the fog will leave behind nightmarish scenes of their home world in ruins. Up to their third death, these nightmares begin to include twisted, monstrous versions of characters they know from their world and this one, hunting them through the ruins, leaving natural sleep an unpleasant and increasingly exhausting endeavor. With each death beyond three, the mental stability of characters breaks slightly. The extent will be discussed, but can include hallucinations, emotional instability, new found phobias, fits of blood lust, inability to access certain skills or abilities for a short time and other side effects. These will always be discussed between a mod and a player before being implemented. No one will be forced to take an instability that makes them uncomfortable to play. These consequences are designed to be for the character, not the player. | ||||||||||||
